Last year I could guess early on if a highlight was going to lead to a goal. Thanks to the A.I being more intelligent the outcomes of highlights are unpredictable. Perhaps the biggest praise I can heap upon the new match engine is that it provokes far more emotion than past versions. The likes of Box-to-box midfielder and Pressing Forward that rely more on mental stats are now viable even at the highest levels of football. By placing more value on non-technical attributes, several of the off-meta roles are further validated.
However, this only applies to individuals with good teamwork, decisions, and vision. But now players usually make the correct play assuming they have the required attributes.Ĭase in point, this year is the first Football Manager where your forwards will willingly square the ball rather than take a bad shot from an awkward angle. In years gone three on two counterattacks like this would have kept me up at night. In particular, the dominance of meta Gegenpress tactics in recent years has become problematic. Although last year showed some improvements, the more recent titles have been guilty of failing to accurately simulate real-life football. Developer Sports Interactive puts a lot of work into making sure the data on their end matches up with its real-life equivalent.Īnd yet many of the previous Football Manager games have had some glaring issues on this front. The idea is to simulate real-life football as accurately as possible. This is what decides what and how often different kinds of plays should appear during a game. Nothing is more important in Football Manager than its match engine. But Football Manager 2021 has seen Sports Interactive go back to the drawing board and focus on fixing the biggest issues that have plagued the franchise over the last few years. And although it is still considered the champion of football management simulation games, recent titles have fallen short of expectations.

British studio Sports Interactive is in that group and is responsible for the long-running Football Manager franchise.ĭebuting as Championship Manager back in 1992, this series has been through a lot of change. The tragic state of NBA 2K this year says it all, but some sports game developers do at least try their best to change things up. Strict deadlines and a lack of time result in the absence of innovation. Yeah, I’m one of those.Annual sports games are often the victim of short development cycles. I can actually see myself playing a save up until the 2030 World Cup this time around. Football Manager 2020 takes a little bit longer to get going than in other versions, but once you shift gears, it starts running like a cheetah. It makes things a bit more realistic, a little less bureaucratic, and more fluid once you set things up.

Some small additions, such as talking to the club’s chairman and the backroom staff even before you can access the inbox, the addition of a code of conduct, the possibility of copying and pasting your training schedule for the whole year at once, hirable loan managers, and an improved club vision subsection, were also very welcome.

The players and stadiums look better than ever, as they now look they came straight out of a PS2 game instead of a 3DO game. Sports Interactive’s facial recognition system is still not very good, but it’s leaps and bounds ahead of the abysmal tool featured in NBA 2K20. The graphical engine has been vastly improved, with my virtual manager actually looking like a human being for once. I took my time to start off my save, but once I did, I was pleasantly surprised with the subtle, but excellent quality of life improvements I could notice right from the getgo. An improved club vision section with short-term and long-term goals.
